A woman who refused to be left in the shadow of her husband, Elizabeth Hamilton was an incredible woman. Upon Alexander Hamilton’s death, she worked tirelessly to protect her husband’s legacy, working against his enemies and time itself, while also raising money for a Hamilton monument. She also founded the Orphan Asylum Society, New York’s first private orphanage, caring for the orphans and even paying for some of their schoolings. She constantly looked tragedy in the face and walked straight past every time.
